The Story of Santa Clarita's
Historic Grizzly Bears
By
John Boston
The Signal's Time Ranger &
Santa Clarita Valley Historian
It had the track
the size of a dinosaur - 19 inches in diameter. The Monarch grizzly reportedly
plagued local ranchers, making off with over 100 head of cattle during
its reign over the Santa Clarita. It also killed, and ate, seven men.
When Canyon Country pioneer Col. John Lang shot the epic bruin in 1877,
he was shocked at the size of the beast. It was over 10-feet tall and
could reach into a second story window. It weighed 2,350 pounds - the
size of about 17 grown-ups. Modern male Grizzlies weigh between 1,100
and 1,500 pounds, females weigh considerably less.
Why were these bears so much bigger? Hunters and some scientists think
they just may have been the last of a species or grew bigger because they
didn't have to hibernate in the warmer climates.
